The only game in town

The only game in town

Stay on the good side; battle the other.
Decry the sordid, the cruel, the ignoble.

Work to remedy apparent injustices, shortcomings,
patent errors – surely, a worthy endeavor.  It’s all part

of the game and this is the only game in town.
Keep bailing.  Labor to heal the wounded,

feed the hungry, punish the guilty.  Curse
the quandary in which we find ourselves.

It’s part of the game and this is the only game in town.
Air to the Game Master, if you care to believe in Him,

your personal grievances.  Point out where
He has failed you and everyone else . . .

while conceding your own imperfections.  And hypocrisy.
It’s part of the game and this is the only game in town.

But when you see through it, when you give up on it,
when you want out of the game –

cease your resistance – and your participation.
Let it go.  Turn away.  Let it go.  Turn to

the only chance there is (for you and mankind)
and in your deepest humility and helplessness,

surrender to the one endeavor worth pursuing,
the one freedom, the one treasure worth the quest.

O child of God, this is the game
and it is the only game in town.
