Enchanting toys

Enchanting toys

Jesus performed miracles.
Curious the word performed,

its theatrical connotation,
the mesmerized masses attracted

and then love let loose
to cull and glean

those with ears to hear
from those drawn to power,

to avoidance, the illusory loophole
to the necessity of suffering and surrender.

Only one miracle, claimed my Lord -
to alter the human heart

to submission, the switch
from power to love.

Come along little children, let us pack away
our scintillating trifles, our brief, enchanting toys.

Are we not ready for the deeply buried,
solid, dearly sought, lasting ore of infinite worth?

O child of God, put this realm behind you
by living through it.
